Excerpts from "After All, It Was My Honor: A Daughter's Caregiving Chronicles"

Table of Contents

"....It's impossible to anticipate all that might be needed from us as caregivers.  Caregiving is actually all about responding.  Responding when needed, and not before.  Helping in just the right doses, and not too much.  Balancing the time and tasks with life's other demands and opportunities, and keeping everything in its proper place....."

I learned....Most people do the best they know how to do at the time.  But, it's so hard not to have regrets.

"....We never know what's ahead, but nearly 30 years of caregiving, for children and Mom and Dad simultaneously, was not on my radar screen in 1974.  I'm not sure I realized how our situation was playing out until 15-20 years into the balancing act.  It's possible to travel on auto pilot for a very long time!...."

I learned......To be a caregiver you must possess a balance of strength, amnesia, determination, denial, laughter and dedication.

"....Many nursing homes and assisted living communities today have evolved to recognize that we all need purpose in our days -- no matter how ill we might be.  Residents are given more control over their lives--like the freedom to get up when they would nomally rise in the morning, not according to the staff's schedule.  Some care communities are now built around a central living space that encourages residents to participate in daily activities.  And, there's recognition that interactions with children, animals and flowers bring hope and caring to days that could otherwise be filled only with loneliness and despair.  In these care environments it's possible to live life with the dignity we all deserve, especially at a time when so much is being taken away by a disease....."
